In a dental treatment room, light is not a detail: it conditions the accuracy of the gesture, the comfort of the practitioner and the patient's perception. Poor lighting wears out the eyes, distorts the appreciation of the hues (essential in aesthetic dentistry) and creates embarrassing shade zones. Here are the criteria that make a good care room lighting.
1. Colour temperature (in Kelvin)
The colour temperature defines the colour of light, from warm white (2700 K) to cold white (6500 K). In the treatment room, we usually look for a neutral white to slightly cold, around 4000 à 5000 K : neutral enough not to distort the colors, without being aggressive. The luminaires with adjustable temperature allow to adapt the atmosphere according to the area and the time of day.
2. Colour rendering index (CRI / CRI)
The CRI measures the fidelity with which a light restores the real colors, on a scale of 0 to 100. In dentistry, this is a criterion. capital : the choice of a shade of composite or ceramic must be made under a faithful light. Aim for a CRI ≥ 90 for professional quality care lighting. For more information, read our full guide on the importance of an CRI ≥ 95 in dental practice.
3. A homogeneous light, without glare
The general lighting of the room must diffuse a soft and uniform light, without hot spots or direct glare in the field of vision of the practitioner or patient lying. This is all the interest of wide diffused luminaires, such as ring suspensions, LED panels or the Extra-fine LED ceiling lamps the ceiling.
To be noted: the general lighting of the complete room — without replacing it — the scalytic lamp of the armchair. One ensures overall visual comfort, the other illuminating the oral cavity precisely.
4. Intensity and uniformity
A treatment room requires a high and constant level of illumination. The objective: to eliminate the brutal contrasts between the very bright work area and the rest of the room, which fatigue the eye by means of accommodation. A well-distributed light reduces this fatigue over a day of consultations.
5. Design and integration
Finally, the luminaire is part of the patient experience. A modern practice deserves a lighting that integrates with elegance. Our ranges dedicated to care rooms — as in Moon EVO, EVO Ring or EVO Signature — combine light performance and clean design. To go further, theEVO Media 60 even incorporates a screen for the patient's comfort.
In summary
Good care room lighting is based on four pillars: a neutral colour temperature (~4000-5000 K), a high CRI (≥ 90), a homogeneous diffusion without glare, and a comfortable intensity. All, ideally, with a design up to your practice.
