"My room is 4 meters by 4 – what light is it for me?"This is the most useful question you can ask us, because the surface and height of your room determine 80% of the answer. Here is the practical guide, slice by slice, to properly size the main lighting of your dental room.
The 3 measures that count (take them before you read on)
- The surface (length × width) — it determines the total luminous flux required
- The ceiling height — it decides between ceiling ceiling and suspension
- The position of the chair — the main luminaire must cover the work area without creating a shadow
Objective to be achieved in all cases: 750 to 1 000 lux on the work plan, as detailed in our guide to lighting levels.
Compact room: less than 12 m2
Typical of urban offices and rooms added in renovation. On this scale, only one luminaire well positioned above the chair area is sufficient — but each centimeter of ceiling counts.
- Height < 2.50 m : prefer an extra-fine ceiling in projection type EVO Slim — no lost volume, homogeneous illumination
- Height ≥ 2.50 m : a compact circular suspension type Moon EVO or EVO Media 60 (Ø60 cm, with screen) is positioned above the chair without crushing the room
Standard room : 12 to 18 m2
The most common format in France. The wheelchair area occupies the centre, with a peripheral work plane which also needs to be properly illuminated.
- Solution 1 : a generous suspension — Moon EVO, EVO Oval Media 90 (oval, integrated screen) — centered on the wheelchair area
- Solution 2 sources : main luminaire above the chair + additional lighting of the working area (slip or secondary ceiling), useful if the room is deep
- The oval format naturally follows the axis of the armchair; the square format (EVO Media Square 60) structure a piece with regular proportions — see our Guide to formats
Large room : 18 to 25 m2
Surgery rooms, implantology, new large-designed practices. A single central light point is no longer enough: the corners of the room fall below the 500 lux regulations.
- Main luminaire large format above the work area: EVO Media Square 60 Ultra (screen 43 inches), EVO Media 60 Ultra (large ring Ø150 cm, screen 43 inches UHD 4K) or Frame Curve (rectangular)
- Complete the periphery : fine ceiling or indirect lighting to homogenize — the gap between the centre and edges must not tire the eye (see visual fatigue)
Atypical or very large room: above 25 m2
Clinics, multi-fault dental centers, open trays: dimensioning is done in working areas, not per piece. This is the field of theCustomized study — each chair receives its light cover, the circulations pass in softer lighting.
The reliable shortcut: Send us the dimensions of your room and a photo taken from the door via our form — you will receive a specific recommendation (model, size, location), free of charge and without commitment. It's faster than any abacus.
Conventional dimensioning errors
- Choose the luminaire before measuring the height — a suspension under 2.40 m of ceiling visually interferes, even if well centered
- Dimensioning for the room and forgetting the chair — the main luminaire must cover the actual working area, not the geometric centre of the room
- Overequiping a small room — beyond the budget, too many sources in a small volume create glare
- Neglect angles in large rooms — this is where standards fall into default when checking
In summary
Less than 12 m2: a compact luminaire, projecting if the ceiling is low. From 12 to 18 m2: a generous suspension centered on the chair, oval or square depending on the room. Beyond: main luminaire large format + peripheral complements, and one study in zones from 25 m2. In all cases, the three starting measures — surface, height, position of the chair — are sufficient to obtain a reliable recommendation.
