Scialytic and ambient lighting: the essential duo of the treatment room

Dental scialytic and ambient LED lighting — the duo of the care room

The scialytics is the best known lighting in the dental practice — and the most misunderstood. He is often asked to do a job that is not his: enlighten the room. Now a scialytic lights up mouth, on a field of about 20 cm, and nothing else. This is what we need to know about this equipment, its types and its prices — and why its effectiveness depends directly on a second lighting that is much less spoken of: the atmosphere.

What exactly is a scialytic?

It is the operating lighting of the chair: a concentrated source that delivers 8 000 to 30 000 lux in the field (normative framework: ISO 9680), without shadows carried thanks to its multi-source design, with a high CRI for diagnosis. The term comes from Greek — literally "that removes the shadow." Recent models are LED-powered, intensity-adjustable, and often offer a "composite mode" that filters the blue wavelengths to avoid premature polymerization of resins.

Types of scialytics

On the budget side: from a few hundred euros for entry-level to several thousand euros for premium scialytics from large manufacturers — the price follows optical quality (homogeneity, CRI, settings) and integration.

Transparency: EVO-LIGHT does not manufacture scialytics. We are designing the other half of the duo — the general lighting of the room — and that is precisely why we know how much the two must be thought of together.

Why Scialytic alone is never enough

Imagine working 8 hours a day by looking at a point at 25,000 lux... and a room at 300 lux. Every time your eye leaves the mouth — instruments, screen, assistant — your eye must accommodate at a distance of 1 to 80. Repeated hundreds of times a day, this effort is the first cause of visual fatigue of the practitioner : dry eyes, headache, blurred vision at the end of the day.

The parade is known: the ambient lighting shall not descend below 1/10th of the perceived operating level. In concrete terms, with a modern scialytic, this requires 750 to 1 000 lux of general lighting on the work area — well above the minimum regulatory level of 500 lux (detail in our guide to the levels of illumination).

Give both lights: the 3 rules

The well-designed duo, in practice

In a well thought-out treatment room, the scialytic and the main luminaire respond: the luminaire — a type suspension Moon EVO, EVO Ringor a ceiling with built-in TV screen — concentrates on the armchair area and raises the atmosphere to 750-1 000 lux homogenous; the scialytic has to do its real work: the 20 cm of the oral cavity. Result: less fatigue, more reliable diagnosis, and a room that breathes instead of being a dark tunnel holed in a projector.

Classic mistakes

In summary

Scialytic and ambient lighting are not competing: these are the two halves of the same visual system. The first one illuminates the mouth (8,000-30 000 lux, ISO 9680), the second one illuminates everything else (750-1,000 lux recommended, EN 12464-1) — and the second one decides whether your days end with or without headache. If your scialytic is already chosen, you have to size your partner: send us the dimensions of your room via our form, we recommend suitable general lighting.
