In most of the projectsdental practice layout, the lighting comes last: a line at the bottom of the electrician's estimate, decided when the partitions are laid and the budget started. This is the most costly mistake of the project — not in immediate euros, but in daily comfort for the next 20 years. Here's how to integrate lighting at the right time, whether you're creating, renovating or working with an architect.
Why "last light" is a trap
- Electric reservations are already made — moving an arrival to the ceiling after the fact, it is reopening a finished ceiling
- The chair is frozen — the main luminaire is centered on the chair, not on the middle of the room
- The remaining budget decides in your place — we end up with generic slabs in the treatment room (see our comparison). LED plate vs professional ceiling lamp)
- Three uncoordinated trades — electrician, plaquist, AV installer succeed instead of acting together
The right calendar: lighting in the plane phase
The ideal moment to decide the lighting is where the installation of the armchairs is emerging on the plane — neither before (the part is not defined), nor after (all is fixed). At this stage, three decisions are taken in one meeting:
- Position and type of main luminaire of each treatment room — suspension, ceiling, with or without built-in TV screen (a decision that changes reservations: power supply + network)
- Target levels by area — 750-1 000 lux in care, 300-500 in reception, 200-300 waiting (the standards and levels by area)
- The command plan — switches, variators, scenarios (morning reception, care, housekeeping)
Under renovation: The calendar compresses but logic holds. The right reflex is to do the lighting study BEFORE you sign the electric quote — the two documents must answer, not discover.
What lighting budget in a development?
A complete practice layout is commonly in hundreds of thousands of euros. Lighting generally represents less than 3 % — for the element which the practitioner undergoes or appreciates 8 hours a day. Order of magnitude by project (detail in our price guide) :
Care room alone — 2 500 à 6 000 €
Practice 2-3 armchairs + reception + waiting — 8 000 à 20 000 €
Complete clinic (architectural project) — 20 000 à 50 000 €
Working with an architect or an architect: who does what
- The architect/arranger defines volumes, atmospheres and visual identity — lighting is its ally of staging
- The luminaire manufacturer (we) dimension the apparatus: flow, CRI, UGR, installation relative to the armchairs — and provide the technical data sheets that the electrician needs
- Electrician run: reservations, wiring, installation
At home EVO-LIGHT, we regularly work live with the practice planners: plans received, illumination study area by area rendered, integration sheets provided. That's the meaning of our offer. Customised.
The checklist lighting your project
- Installation of seats validated on a plane BEFORE the choice of luminaires
- One main luminaire per treatment room, centered on the work area
- Electrified reservations (+ network if TV screen) integrated into the electricity lot
- Target levels written at the CCTV / estimate: 750-1 000 lux care, CRI ≥ 95, UGR ≤ 19
- Type of ceiling stopped (technical / placo / concrete) — it conditions the installation (our installation guide)
- Differentiated atmospheres: warm wait (2 700-3 000 K), neutral care (4,000 K)
- A measure at the end of the construction site, recorded
In summary
In a dental practice development or renovation project, lighting is neither a finishing nor a budget adjustment item: it is a decision on the plan, which takes place at the time of the installation of the armchairs and coordinates with the electrician as soon as the reservations are made. Well placed in the calendar, it does not cost more — it simply avoids paying twice. Are you on the project? Send us your plans via our form : the lighting study area by area is included, and we coordinate directly with your architect or electrician.
